James Charles talks historic role with CoverGirl, coming out on 'Ellen'
“When I first told my parents I wanted to do makeup as well, that was a big thing,” Charles jokes. “They were like, ‘Oh, you know, we love you no matter what. Like if you’re trans, you can tell us.’ And I was like, 'Oh, I’m not trans.’ (And they said) 'No, it’s Ok. Like if you’re trans, you can really tell us.’ (And I said) 'No, it’s really Ok. I’m really not, but thank you.’”
“It just took a lot of explaining and kind of understanding because men in makeup obviously is a very new concept,” he continues.
“It has not been widely accepted in the past so it was definitely just a learning process,” but eventually Charles’ parents understood that he wanted to do it for his career and as a form of self-expression.
